Things have changed.
Women are now the majority of enrolled law students. Women now comprise the majority of law firm associates. But women remain underrepresented among law firm equity partners, corporate general counsel, law school deans and tenured law school faculty, and other positions considered the most powerful, influential, or financially lucrative.
Women used to have the right to control their own bodies and to pursue the healthcare they needed to do so. In too many parts of the country that is no longer true, or it comes with an asterisk.
In Chicago, per the Chicago Sun-Times on February 1, 2024: Chicago falls short: At Chicago [law] firms, 48.9% of associates are women, up from 46.5% in 2022 and just short of the new national record for gender diversity in the legal profession.
It’s time for the various women lawyers groups in Illinois to find more ways that we can collaborate and support each other in our efforts to advance and promote women in the legal profession and women’s rights in the broader society. That starts with getting to know who we all are.
Please send a representative to join women’s and other affinity bar organizations in Illinois; women’s affinity groups from law firms, corporate law departments, and government agencies; law school women’s and other groups that serve or represent women; and organizations that are comprised significantly of women in the legal profession to send a representative to an introductory gathering of women lawyers’ groups in the metropolitan Chicago area.
