Introduction
The American legal profession has been struggling with the issue of being a more diverse and inclusive profession for over a century. Efforts continue apace but the breadth and complexity of the issue make it difficult for practicing lawyers, judges and others who are vested in achieving greater inclusion in the profession but lack the time to fully study and understand the issues to gain a panoramic perspective and understanding of the profession’s efforts as a whole.

In the absence of a systematic and comprehensive way for those interested in and concerned about diversity and inclusion in the legal profession to stay abreast of the most current information about statistics, issues, strategies, programs, or policies pertaining to the subject, IILP has launched a program to look at, report on, and discuss the State of Diversity and Inclusion in the Legal Profession. This effort is comprised of two parts:

  • Publication of the annual IILP Review: The State of Diversity and Inclusion in the Legal Profession; and,
  • Annual presentation in 6-8 cities of half-day symposia exploring and discussing the findings in the IILP Review.

The State of Diversity and Inclusion in the Legal Profession offers the comprehensive scope needed by leaders in corporations, law firms, government agencies and bar associations to effect meaningful change in their own organizations. It collects and compiles all the most current and relevant information into a single source so that anyone seeking the information need no longer investigate myriad sources and hope something valuable has not been overlooked.

IILP Review: The State of Diversity and Inclusion in the Legal Profession
The IILP Review: The State of Diversity and Inclusion in the Legal Profession (“IILP Review”)” targets the busy practicing lawyer, judge, law student or other professional who works within the legal profession and who is interested in diversity and inclusion issues but requires that relevant information be more easily and readily accessible. It includes:

  • In-depth examination and review of cutting edge diversity and inclusion research and programs.
  • Updated statistical data about the legal profession’s diversity and inclusion.
  • A recap of diversity and inclusion trends and practices, with a focus upon those that are most interesting/promising/provocative/etc.
  • A round-up of new diversity and inclusion trends and initiatives.
  • Analyses of and thought leadership on different facets of diversity and inclusion issues.

A hard copy of the IILP Review is available to all the attendees of the State of Diversity and Inclusion symposia. Copies are also provided to the career services offices of accredited law schools and available as a free download on the IILP website. Click here to download a copy now.

The State of Diversity and Inclusion in the Legal Profession Symposia
In connection with the publication of the IILP Review, IILP presents an annual series of half-day State of Diversity and Inclusion in the Legal Profession symposia during which the IILP will examine and discuss the findings in the IILP Review. The symposia include discussion of the most current data and statistics, analysis of the latest efforts and trends, evaluation and assessment of current strategies, and otherwise provide an overview of diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. The audience for the symposia are corporate General Counsel, other senior management in corporate law departments, and corporate in-house counsel; law firm chairmen, management, and partners and professional personnel involved in law firm diversity efforts; government agency and public policy leaders involved in diversity and inclusion efforts and supplier diversity goals; human resources professionals; academics; bar association leaders; judges; and law students.
